Treble Award Win for Charter
Charter Housing is shouting from the rooftops after winning three prestigious national housing awards, in recognition of their hard work and innovation.
The Welsh Housing Awards, are organised by the Chartered Institute of Housing Cymru, to recognise excellence across the Social Housing sector.
The awards recognise projects that have made a significant difference to the lives of others; Charter’s Tenancy Solutions Team picked up the ‘Housing Hero’ award for their unique Prevention by Intervention approach adopted by staff going that extra mile to make sure tenants are given the best chance to stay in their homes. The approach has been incredibly successful in averting a considerable number of evictions by engaging proactively with tenants before problems mount up.
Charter also scooped the ‘Campaign of the year’ and ‘People’s Choice’ Awards for its inspirational Go Girls partnership, won in conjunction with Bron Afon Housing Association. Go Girls has made a huge impact on the lives of over 40 girls, aged 16-25, across Newport and Torfaen. Through a combination of active campaigning, regular support meetings and workshops tackling serious issues such as safer relationships and women in the work place, the Go Girls have increased their confidence, and equipped them with the skills to enable them to cope better with life’s challenges and take action to create positive change.
The Go Girls recently featured on BBC News Wales, highlighting some of the innovative work being undertaken by Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) across Wales and demonstrating that RSLs provide much more than housing.
Charter tenant Jamie-Leigh Grierson, aged 25 spoke about the impact the Go Girls has had on her life. Jamie said: ‘In Go Girls we all feel the same, we’ve all got problems and we support each other. In the past I didn’t think that I could have a voice, I thought that I had to put up with the stuff that I had experienced through bad relationships, I thought that was normal but now I’m totally different. I am now in College full time and determined to make the best life possible for myself and my daughter! I am passionate about sharing what I have learnt!’
A delighted Kath Edwards, Charter Corporate Director said “We are overwhelmed to have won not just one but three awards! They have both been fantastic unique projects to work on, and our success is testament to the great staff teams driving them forward, their willingness to engage and the passion displayed by all the people involved with these life-changing projects.”
