Mariners Quay collects second award

Mariners Quay has received further recognition, picking up the “Sustainable Project of the Year” award in the Chartered Institute of Building Engineers, South Wales Region category.

Mariners Quay was chosen for its sustainable and renewable systems, demonstrating innovation and consideration for the environment, especially with regard to constructability, operability and cost.

The award is the second for Mariner’s Quay. Earlier this year the development won the Constructing Excellence in Wales, Zero Carbon Award.

Mariners Quay is a cutting edge development currently under construction along Newport’s regenerated riverfront. It will provide 101 eco-friendly homes, with the first Charter residents due to move in over the next few days. Watch out for more news over the coming weeks………

Local children visit Mariner’s Quay site

Builders, Leadbitter, organised a series of site visits for children from two local primary schools in Pill. 240 children have visited the site to date, with more visits planned in March 2010. Leadbitter has also set up ‘construction corners’ at both schools. The children learned about construction work and were educated about the dangers of playing in or near construction sites. They also participated in a health and safety poster competition, with winners receiving their prizes at their morning Assembly. The children’s creativity and enthusiasm has prompted another competition – this time to name the streets and apartment blocks at Mariner’s Quay.’

Mariner’s Quay – meet the builder

In November 2009, local people had the opportunity to meet members of the Mariner’s Quay project team to find out more about this exciting new development being built on their doorstep. Held at the Pill Millennium Centre, people could view development plans and artist’s impressions. Staff from Charter and Fairlake were on hand to explain what life would be like living in one of these cutting-edge homes. The Mariner’s Quay ‘vision’ was well received by local people, with over 40 of them registering interest in either buying or renting the properties.

Trainee Placements are Mariner’s Quay

In a joint project with the Construction Youth Trust, three trainees have gained valuable skills and experience during 6 week placements at Mariner’s Quay.

The placements were so successful that Leadbitter are shortly to repeat the process with three trainee carpenters. Following an 8 week period, the trainee who has most impressed site staff will be offered a three month full-time, paid traineeship.

£5.00 a week utility bills in Newport’s first eco-friendly homes

Winter fuel bills will soon be hitting the doormat and are forecast to have increased by up to 50% following the recent cold snap. This can only lead to an even tighter financial start to the New Year for households.

One Newport based housing and support provider, the Seren Group, are aiming to resolve this problem for their residents. They are currently developing groundbreaking new homes at Mariners Quay, alongside Newport’s river front. These new homes are specifically designed to substantially reduce utility bills, which could cost as little as £5.00 per week.

Developed in partnership with Newport City Council, Newport Unlimited, Leadbitter and the Welsh Assembly Government, the homes are being built in the historic area of Newport known as Old Town Dock.

Mariner’s Quay will provide over 100 homes for affordable rent through Charter Housing and for sale through the Newport City Living Home Ownership Scheme, operated by Fairlake. Properties will range from one and two bedroom apartments to family homes. The first homes will be ready this summer.

Innovatively built to incorporate the latest environmental technology, the new homes will include features such as triple glazing, water efficient fittings and rainwater harvesting to reduce mains water consumption, an on-site electricity generator and sun boxes to capture the warmth of the sun.

Mariner’s Quay is designed to achieve Level 5 rating under The Code for Sustainable Homes and, once completed, will be the largest scheme in Wales and one of the largest in the UK to achieve this rating. The new development will be at the forefront of 21st century living, encouraging a healthy and environmentally-friendly lifestyle.

Residents will receive a detailed ‘Green Guide’ and a personal consultation explaining how to get the best out of their cutting-edge new homes.
