Growing Together Nailed It!
Young single parents from Charters Growing Together project took a trip to B&Q DIY training centre in Swansea last month to hone up their DIY skills. As well as learning about all the different hand tools they also got to practice using them efficiently and safely. They then got some hands on experience with all manner of power tools including an electric sander, various drills, router, jigsaw and learned how to use a chop saw.
Their skills were then put to the test as they designed and made their own name plates using a router. After careful colour planning and painting the results were fantastic! To practice some more skills with an electric drill and screwdriver everyone made their own ‘tool caddy’ to take away with them.
The skills learned have helped the parents to feel more confident to tackle jobs around their home. After the session one tenant said that she had now put up a curtain rail and this time it has stayed up!
The Growing Together project is funded by the National Lottery. The project provides help for young single parents, living in Charter Housing properties, to focus on their future and develop both the practical and life skills they need to make a positive future for them and their family.
