In Your Community : Working in Communities : The Literacy Learning Shared Begginings

This project has been funded by the Chartered Institute of Housing through Reading is Fundamental with the main aim of giving children under 3 years of age a head start into reading before they start school. Statistics back up the fact that children who are read to at an early age progress at a faster rate than other children who do not have this advantage. The main aim of the project therefore is to give young children who live in areas prevalent to social exclusion a head start before they start school. One of the main ways this is achieved is by encouraging parents to read to their children by making children's books easy to access. Examples of this include giving parents advice on which books are suitable for their children and also in providing them with free books.

The way in which these ideas are introduced are subtle and varied and include working with parents to produce art and crafts projects that encourage parents to become involved in reading to their children.

So far Charter has brought this 10 week programme to our estates at Maesglas, Cwmbran, Abergavenny, Pillgwenlly, and Blackwood, with the next course being planned in the near future for Duffryn.
