Investing in Communities : Working in Communities

Queensmeadow Project

Environmental MattersThis is essentially a partnership between Charter, Gwerin Housing Association Newport City Council and the tenants of Barrackswood, Harlequin and Barracksfield estates. Together we are looking to improve the environment on all three estates in line with the recent “Planning for Real” consultation exercise which highlighted improvements residents would like to see in the area.To fulfil this objective a community development worker has recently been appointed by the Queensmeadow partnership to work with all parties. Recent projects have included a community litterpick as well as a project to clear a footpath between Barrackswood and Barracksfield estates.

Learning Links Project
Learning Links is Charter's award winning intergenerational learning project. The scheme, which is part funded by the European Social Fund, involves the Association's senior tenants passing on their skills to younger people from socially disadvantaged groups. Around twenty senior volunteers have worked with special needs teenagers, youngsters who've been brought up in care, asylum seekers, and women from ethnic minority groups, under the trans-national Equal programme to improve employability.

BME Project
The aim of Black and Minority Ethnic project is twofold: Firstly, trying to find out what barriers are preventing BME communities from having access to the services available in general, such as housing and many others. Secondly, removing these barriers and engaging these communities into Charter's various community development projects.

The Literacy Project Shared Beginnings
This project has been funded by the Chartered Institute of Housing through Reading is Fundamental with the main aim of giving children under 3 years of age a head start into reading before they start school. Statistics back up the fact that children who are read to at an early age progress at a faster rate than other children who do not have this advantage. The main aim of the project therefore is to give young children who live in areas prevalent to social exclusion a head start before they start school. One of the main ways this is achieved is by encouraging parents to read to their children by making children's books easy to access. Examples of this include giving parents advice on which books are suitable for their children and also in providing them with free books.

The way in which these ideas are introduced are subtle and varied and include working with parents to produce art and crafts projects that encourage parents to become involved in reading to their children.

So far Charter has brought this 10 week programme to our estates at Maesglas, Cwmbran, Abergavenny, Pillgwenlly, and Blackwood, with the next course being planned in the near future for Duffryn.
