Kick starting community fun
Young people from a community in Newport have been treated by Charter to a sports event to warm them up for half-term fun, with help from Newport’s Sports Development team, who provided referees.
Last weekend Charter’s Youth Team put on a football tournament for youngsters from Harlequin Drive and Barrackswood, Newport in the estate’s multi-use play area. Youngsters from the age of nine to fifteen competed for trophies including best goalkeeper, best sportsmanship and player of the tournament with every player taking part being awarded a medal.
The event was part of the Youth Team’s work in the community, which includes breaking down barriers between age groups and encouraging participation in sports and activities at The Bunker, the local community hub.
Gareth Jones, Youth and Community Development Officer said;
“Everyone really enjoyed themselves and put a lot of effort in. Luckily we had good weather and the players got stuck in. We’re looking forward to working with them again at half-term.”
Local Neighbourhood Manager Judith Drew supported the event and was happy at the large turnout:
“There is a lot of open space in this area and it was great to see the boys enjoying the facilities and being active.”
